Nexus Tablet the next step in Android’s evolution

We are at that time of the year again when the iPad’s latest avatar is about to be unveiled and the entire tech world is rife with rumors ranging from whether it will have a Retina Display and LTE to whether it will have the quad core A6 processor or something else entirely. And why shouldn’t people be excited about the iPad 3’s release? After all it was the original iPad's release that created a market for tablets and since then the iPad has ruled the roost when it comes to this segment of mobile computing devices.

But in 2011 when HP decided to clear its stock of the Touchpad by offering it on sale for $99, the entire inventory of tablets was lapped up in a matter of hours. The launch of the no frills Kindle Fire as a cheap multimedia consumption device for $199 showed that there was indeed a market for these low cost devices that served their core purpose. The sale of these devices has brought about a change in the market with every major seller beginning to offer a midsize tablet under $200. Those like Barnes and Noble took up this challenge and began offering their tablets for $199 backed by their online content stores. Whereas those like BlackBerry resorted to fire sales for their PlayBooks to ensure the presence of their devices in the hands of the consumers.

Google with its Android operating system now currently rules the smartphone arena. It has been the tablet market that has remained elusive to Android. Though the bestselling tablet after iPad has been the Android-based Kindle Fire, it is not really Android in the real sense because it does not offer access to all Google’s services and restrict’s content to Amazon. Thus the sale of Kindle Fire doesn’t do Google any good. So the tablets which are Android in the real sense like ones from Samsung or Asus are usually a hit and miss and haven't really tasted the success like that of the iPad or the Kindle Fire.

800 crore setup to aid government in tracking all web traffic

Security for Govt. Sites

Deeply troubled by the growing instances of terror attacks in the country, and their inability to deal with it in the absence of a sophisticated system has driven the government to take some tough steps. Now, Times of India reports that the government is in the process of setting up the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC), an Internet scanning agency that will essentially monitor all the web traffic passing through all the Internet service providers operating in the country, for the government. The NCCC can then, in an event of a possible security threat to the nation issue 'actionable alerts' to the government, prompting quick action. A meeting, which took place on February 3, 2012, at the National Security Council Secretariat under the PMO, discussed the NCCC in detail. According to the report, the NCCC will, essentially "scan whole cyber traffic flowing at the point of entry and exit at India's international internet gateways".

Yahoo threatens Facebook as social media patent war looms

Yahoo has demanded licensing fees from Facebook for use of its technology, the companies said on Monday, potentially engulfing social media in the patent battles and lawsuits raging across much of the tech sector.

Yahoo has asserted claims on patents that include the technical mechanisms in the Facebook's ads, privacy controls, news feed and messaging service, according to a source briefed on the matter.

Representatives from the two companies met on Monday and the talks involved 10 to 20 of Yahoo's patents, said the source, who was not aware of what specific dollar demands Yahoo may have made for licenses. Yahoo did not elaborate in an emailed statement on details of its discussions with Facebook, but indicated it would not flinch at taking the social networking giant to court over its patents.

Samsung to compete with Apple for digital education

Last month, Apple announced " iBooks 2.0" for the iPad, where users could avail of digital textbooks for far cheaper than purchasing hard copies. Now Samsung Electronics plans to get in the game and take on Apple in the digital textbook and education market. According to The Chosunilbo, Samsung is getting set to reveal what they're calling the "Learning Hub" at Mobile World Congress 2012, next week in Barcelona. The Learning Hub will be a learning platform, which will provide educational content for tablets. The content will include videos of lectures. Samsung says the aim of the platform is to replace paper textbooks in the classroom. A Samsung executive said, "We're going to launch the service in Korea late this month and then go global after April." The executive continued on to say that Samsung are consulting with major foreign educational content developers for potential collaboration.

                                                                                                    Samsung Learning hub Application

iBooks 2 for the iPad allows users to buy textbooks for a maximum of $14.99 (approx Rs.734) a pop, which is about 80 percent cheaper than how much the average paper textbook costs in the U.S. Furthermore, users of the textbooks have access to interactive animations, diagrams, photos, videos and advanced navigation.

How to Run Android apps on Windows

Most Android-based smartphone users would agree that they would prefer testing an app before downloading it to their phone. The reason behind this is usually to avoid unnecessary space hogging apps. Some users might also wish to play some of the cool mobile games available for the Android platform on their PC i.e. on a larger display. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how can your favorite Android apps on your Windows-based PC using a simple and free software called BlueStacks.BlueStacks is an app player for Windows, which can play Android apps faster than it can run on a phone and that too, on a full-screen. The app includes 10 pre-loaded apps and one can add up to 26 more apps of their choice. Favorite apps can be pushed directly from the phone onto the PC using an Android app via internet route.

Google Glasses may Launch in India Costing About Smartphone Price

It sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. Search engine giant Google is developing a pair of electronic glasses that can stream information directly to the user’s eyes in real time.
The glasses, to be launched by the end of the year, will be more like smartphones with the lenses serving as a kind of see-through computer monitor.
Loaded with a low-resolution, built-in camera, the Google glasses “will be able to monitor the world in real time and overlay information about locations, surrounding buildings and friends who might be nearby,” a New York Timesreport said.
“You will be able to check in to locations with your friends through the glasses,” a Google employee told the Times. Google would not confirm whether the ultra-modern eyewear is in development.
The report also says that the state-of-the-art spectacles, not designed for constant wear, will display information via a heads-up display “in an augmented reality view, rather than as a Web browser page like those that people see on smartphones.”

Ubuntu comes to Android

Ubuntu has come to Android phones! Before you go, ‘Does that mean I can boot Ubuntu on my Android phone? Or, does that mean I can get dual booting on my Android phone?’ let's clear out a few things. Canonical has announced Ubuntu for Android and the full scale deployment will be displayed at the Mobile World Congress. Here’s what you’ll get to see. If your Android has Ubuntu installed, you can boot the Ubuntu operating system onto your monitor every time you connect the smartphone using a dock. On its own, the OS is neatly hidden under the hood, so when you’re using your phone, you’ll have your regular Android stuff loading up. It’s somewhat similar to what Motorola has tried in the recent past, with their Webtop accessories, but this is on a more universal level.

Also, whenever your phone is connected, it’s not a stripped down version of Ubuntu that you’ll get to see, but, it will be the exact same thing that you see on a desktop running Ubuntu, with no compromises, whatsoever. Browsers like Chrome, Firefox and their Unity UI, everything will be available on your desktop. What’s interesting to note is that your core details, including SMS, voice calls and contacts will be shared between the two, so there’ll be some good amount of consistency.

Microsoft Attacks Google Apps Via 'Googlighting' Video

One day after Microsoft accused Google of bypassing cookie-related security features in its Internet Explorer browser, a Redmond-backed video has surfaced that attacks Google Apps.
The video, dubbed "Googlighting," channels the 80s TV show Moonlighting and was uploaded to YouTube by Microsoft yesterday. It features an over-confident salesman clad in a white suit and a multi-colored tie reminiscent of the Google logo. He arrives late to a pitch meeting and makes a rather half-assed attempt to sell Google Apps.
"Wait, you want us to be your lab rats?" a female executive asks the Google pitchman after he proposes rolling out Google Apps across her entire company. "Pioneer," he interjects.
Her line of questioning then attacks features Microsoft considers to be lacking in Google Apps, from spell check and sufficient offline access to frequent software updates.
"I could come to work and the software could be different than the day before?" the female exec asks.
"Different, better, completely gone, who knows what the future holds for Google Apps?" the Google employee responds.
A singer then emerges from the corner to suggest that Google's recent house-cleaning efforts might ultimately result in the demise of Google Apps. The search giant killed off Gears, Wave, and Buzz - why not Google Apps? "If Google Apps meets its grave, your business is hosed," the singer croons.
"Beware the Googlighting Stranger," the ad ends.

Microsoft Reveals SkyDrive Will Be Integrated Into Windows 8

There are not many Windows 8 features that excite me as much as the planned integration of Microsoft’s online storage and document editing service SkyDrive in the operating system. A new blog post over at the Building Windows 8 blog reveals how the Redmond company intents to integrate Sky Drive into the Windows operating system.
The post highlights three big features, and promises in the end that the announcement is not the end of it for Sky Drive in Windows.
The three big features that Microsoft announced today are a new SkyDrive Metro style app for Windows 8, SkyDrive file integration into Windows Explorer for Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, and remote file access through SykDrive.

A Metro style SkyDrive app
This is the feature with the least appeal to me personally. I can however see that users who will make use of Metro actively will love it. The new SkyDrive app will launch with the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 at the end of February. Windows 8 users can see and access their files in the Metro user interface directly, on all PCs they have access to.

In one of our earlier reports, we had indicated that the government was very close to achieving this breakthrough move, but at that time, a confirmation was awaited.

Facebook 'makes people feel close'

The majority of people have a positive experience of social networking sites and regularly experience kind gestures when using them, a study by Pew Internet, an American not-for-profit research organisation, has found.

10 Companies SOPA Could Destroy And Why

One of 2011′s most hotly contested political issues, the Stop Online Piracy Act, has spilled over into 2012. The language and far-reaching implications of the bill have caused high-profile workers within the entertainment industry to publicly oppose it; even supporters admit that it could vastly change the internet as we know it. Here are ten of the popular websites that could be potentially destroyed, should SOPA pass.
Facebook – Indisputably one of the most popular social networking sites in the history of the internet, Facebook boasts more than 800 million users around the globe. These users are currently able to post any link they like to their walls or those of their friends; those links can house legal and illegal content with no repercussions to the site itself. Under SOPA, advertizing revenue and any payments could be blocked for the entire network, should one complaint of infringing content be filed.

Apple Patent Reveals Plans for 3D on Steroids

Apple has filed a patent application for a 3D eye-tracking graphical user interface (GUI) for personal electronic devices like the iPhone and iPad.
The application, published Friday by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, describes technology that could be incorporated in the company's iOS mobile operating system for use with gaming, photography, video, biometrics, and surveillance applications, according to the Patently Apple blog, which spotted the filing.
Apple's proposed technology essentially uses various techniques to combine aspects of current 3D simulation for handheld devices with facial-recognition technologies, particularly eye-tracking, to create a more reliable and realistic 3D interface for users.
Current 3D simulation for gaming and other applications on handheld devices uses data from various instruments like accelerometers and gyrometers that are built into the devices to recreate "six-axis" positional information, the blog notes, while facial-recognition software has also been improved upon greatly in recent years for biometrics and other purposes.

Kindle for Android updated to version 3.4

Amazon has officially updated their seminal Android Kindle for Android Application today and brings the firmware version to 3.4. This new update brings only two major things to the tablet which are sure to make it an essential install.
The main thing that has changed with the application is the physical size. In past updates it blew up to over 10 MB and they have managed to bring it back down to about 8. It is not a huge difference but size does matter to some. The only other good option was the addition of  ‘real page numbers.’ This was a feature that mainly was developed last year and makes sure your ebook syncs up exactly the way the printed version does. In the past when you had an ebook and were on page 16, it would be different then the page 16 of a tangible book. This was mainly due to the formatting and the way the table of contents was laid out.  If you are in a bookclub or reading a textbook this is an install you will want to get.

Google Plans For Android Home-Own Branded Wireless Home Entertainment System

You may remember during last year’s Google I/O when Google showed off their vision for a fully connected living room, better known as “Android Home” That was all the way back in May, and if you’re wondering why you haven’t heard any news or rumblings from the Google camp, you wouldn’t be alone. Developers too, have been receiving the same silent treatment without so much as a peep from the boys at Google. But after some new developments reported from theWall Street Journal, we may now know why.
Google has been busy developing their very own wireless home-entertainment system — also known as Project Tungsten — to be marketed under big G’s own brand and will launch later this year. I know, it sounds a little far fetched seeing how Google normally likes to stay holed up in their cloud with their software and internet services, but it almost makes sense. Smartphones, televisions and now an entertainment hub — all connected to each other –  providing a seamless, wireless experience for the consumer.
