Apple is set to announce iOS 6 at the WWDC 2012
event this year and one of the major talking points at the event will be
iOS 6. As of now, details about what Apple will include in the next
major operating software is scarce but reports are floating around that
Apple plans to revamp the Maps app and unveil a new app for Maps without the Google backend. As per a report by BGR, there are now leaked images to give us a glimpse of what this revamped app will look like.
The report sheds some light on the topic by stating, “Apple has been working on an in-house mapping solution for a few years, and it appears as if the company is finally ready to release a new Maps app for iOS, sidestepping Google’s mapping data for its own. BGR has obtained exclusive information and photos of parts of Apple’s new Maps app from a trusted source, and the app features a refreshed user interface including a brand new navigation bar. This bar, we’re told, is silver instead of blue.”
The report also says that since the blue colour scheme was associated with the previous Maps app, Apple may adopt a silver theme in iOS 6, like how they do on the iPad. It is believed that in order to signify the new rewrite to the Maps app, Apple has also redesigned the logo for the app and the logo will now feature the view of their 1 Infinite Loop Campus, but with a colour scheme that is different.
To implement this updated Maps service, Apple has purchased companies such as Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9 in order to create a complete mapping database. Though Apple terms the app as Maps, quite a few people refer to the application as Google Maps because of the backend. However, with the redesign, Apple may rename it to iMaps to avoid any confusion.
