Android’s tablet share at 39% as sales tripled

Android-based tablet sales increased more than threefold during the fourth quarter of 2011. But Apple still dominates, although its market share fell.
The global tablet shipments achieve 26.8 million units during the fourth quarter in 2011, an increase of 150% from 10.7 million during the same period in 2010.
Consumers increasingly prefer tablets rather than netbooks and even entry-level notebookor desktop, Strategy Analytics said.
Android pick up momentum, and together support the operating system vendors shipped 10.5 million units, compared to 3.1 million last years. That gives Android 39.1% share of the global tablet shipments, compared with 29% a year earlier. But Apple‘s share dropped from 68.2% to 57.6%.
Apples shrugs off the threat of a much-hyped from the entry-level models based on Android. It is inevitable that Apple lost market share as more vendors enter the tablet space, according to Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics. But the tablet business is still growing at healthy levels, he said.

Does Apple help iPhone thieves?

Ever heard your friend with an iPhone boasting about the ease with which he gets a replacement from an Apple support outlet? He is not boasting. Apple is very generous in providing easy, on the spot replacements or discount on a new unit, if a broken iPhone under warranty is brought to service.

Well, the twist of the story is that thieves are making a good use of this generosity, since Apple doesn’t care who brings the phone, and only checks if it is still under warranty. Seems the phone is more attached to warranty than the original owner.
The case is making a furor among the iPhone users, as iPhones are a major target of smartphone snatchers in the US. According to NYPD, 70 percent of all phones snatched at subways and streets are iPhones.
Making most of the service policy of Apple, thieves are approaching the stores at least to get a discounted device, which they sell for a better price to someone else, making some quick bucks.

Samsung i9300 Could This Be Galaxy S3?

Rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S III is not so new. In fact, Samsung reportedly will announce this third generation Galaxy s later in February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Although there’s still no certainty about it, but it seems that what is on the official website of Samsung can be a powerful indication that the Galaxy S III will indeed be released in the near future.
A Smartphone with code name GT-i9300 is in the list of Mobiles on Samsung website. This Smartphone mysteriously appeared at the Global Download Center in the United Emirates Arab site. According to Us, if Samsung named the smartphone with i93xx series then possibly it will become a new model considering the Galaxy S uses i90xx, i91 is the Galaxy S II, i9250 is Nexus Galaxy, and i9220 is the  Galaxy Note.

Apple iPad 3 countdown: how to tell if Apple is about to launch a new product

In the world of technology, rumours and speculation surround every company ahead of a new product launch, regardless of what the company says or does.
We’ve had no word from Samsung on the upcoming Galaxy S3, and yet we all love debating what it will and won’t have.
But the rumour mill is never more in overdrive than it is with Apple. The US tech giant only releases a few products each year, yet we talk about these non-existent devices until the cows come home.
This year, the two big products for Apple are the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5. As usual, we’ve had no word from Apple itself, but that has never stopped us before.
Apple’s silence over its products is an excellent marketing tool, fuelling the flames of speculation to build up a juggernaut of hype.

Samsung Galaxy S3 could be just a month away

Will they or won't they? That's the question on everybody's lips as conflicting reports clash over the launch of the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S3.
We had our fingers crossed the S3 would be revealed in the next month, until reports began to surface that the S3 will be delayed. Now it seems Samsung is still trying to make up its mind.
The Verge reports that the S3 won't be unveiled in February. But notorious Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin reckons not only will the phone be unveiled next month, it'll be in shops in April.
It's now a month until Mobile World Congress, the annual mobile trade show where phone companies gather in Barcelona to showcase their wares for the coming year. The S3 could take a bow there, but there a few reasons Samsung may decide to hold back.
The expected S3 will be the follow-up to the smash-hit Samsung Galaxy S2, the biggest Android smart phone going. The S2 was announced at MWC in February last year, so a year later would be a logical time for the S3 to take a bow.

New Gingerbread update for LG Optimus Black rolls out in India

Remember the LG Optimus Black? This very understated phone has managed to pass relatively unnoticed in the sub-20K price bracket, which is a shame really, since it’s one of the better phones that LG makes. Our only real gripe when we reviewed the phone was that it came with Froyo, but now, late as always, LG has finally decided to give it the Gingerbread treatment, in order to keep it relevant in the market. For now, it’s only India and Europe that will be receiving the update.
The update is available through LG’s software update tool, which puts the firmware at 2.3.4. Looking at other manufacturers who’ve gone past beyond this firmware and are now somewhere on 2.3.7, it still does not seem to be quite the latest. However, it’s the changes that are made in these increments that matter and not merely a higher version number, so feature-wise, at least, we hope LG has done their part.

Crypteks USB Drive – World’s Most Secure USB Drive?

With the increasing use of portable data devices, keeping your data private has become quite hard.  I often forget and leave my USB at the office or at friends’ houses, fortunately I don’t have much private data on my USB drive but a lot of people do.  For those people the Crypteks USB Drive is the perfect solution.
The Crypteks USB Drive comes in a very stylish cylinder shaped package that not only provides digital security but also physical security.  The physical security is provided by a five ring combination lock, each ring contains 26 letters and one symbol for a total of 14,348,907 combinations.  If someone got their hands on your Crypteks USB drive, it’ll take them quite a long time to just open the case and get to the USB stick which protects your data with another layer of security in the form of a 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption, which is a U.S. approved standard for up to “Top-Secret” data encryption.

Google to shut Picnik, Sky Map among others

Google has gone ahead and started the process of shutting down some more services. The search giant had decided late last year that it would disable the services that weren’t doing too well for them. The decision was taken and a bunch of services were disabled through the months. Late last week, Google disabled another bunch of these services. The most popular ones from the lot are Picnik and Sky Map. GMC (Google Message Continuity), Needlebase, Urchin and the Social Graph API are some of the other projects to go down under very soon. Picnick, was a fairly popular image editing service based on the cloud. Google had bought over the service back in 2010 and after close to two years in service, it will be shut on the 19th of April. Those who have been using Picnik all this while, have the option of downloading all their images together using a service called Picnik Takeout. Users also have the option to copy their images to Google+.

Google Sky Map, was a project for Android phones that allowed users to look up at the sky and pinpoint at the stars.

Apple Retail Stores in India ??

Former CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs was known as someone who paid attention to detail, while also making sure that the minutest of things were done to perfection. This has been apparent from all his product launches and it even extends to the Apple campus as well as their retail stores. While Apple products in India are being sold through resellers, such as Imagine and the iStore, which is owned by Reliance Digital, the brand does not have a solely owned store in the country, as yet. According to a report by Livemint, it seems that Apple plans to open their retail stores in India, in the same manner as they have stores in U.S, the UK, Germany, France, China and Japan.

The report states that an unnamed official revealed that, “Apple Inc. may open its own shops following the Indian government allowing full ownership of single-brand retail stores by foreign companies, according to a senior official of the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP).

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830I gets Android 2.3.6 update

The Samsung Galaxy Ace (model number S5830I) is reportedly getting the Android 2.3.6 update, as Samsung has finally set a few balls in motion to update its older devices. As reported by Android OS, the update for the Ace is available for download via Samsung’s dedicated software, Kies. Here is the update version for the Ace S5830I: S5830IXXLA2/S5830IODDLA1. Like all other updates, this one will be distributed to Samsung Ace customers in batches, so you’ll have to be a little patient, if you still haven't received the update for your phone.

The Galaxy Ace getting 2.3.6 may be a good deal for some, but the phone in itself does require a major price cut, because it’s competing with the likes of the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman phone and the Spice Mi-350n, in terms of specs and pricing, respectively.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13 with Windows 8: Ultrabook And Tablet in one Gadget

We were back at Lenovo’s suite today and got a chance to spend a bit more time with a laptop that we didn’t get around to discussing on Tuesday. We’ve covered the ThinkPad and IdeaTab already, but we haven’t spent any time on the IdeaPad line. Where ThinkPad primarily targets business users, IdeaPad is a consumer line. There were plenty of IdeaPad laptops on display, but the one that really stood out is their Yoga 13 laptop. It won’t launch until Windows 8 is released, but already it’s looking to be one of the more promising ultrabooks.

Like all ultrabooks, the Yoga 13 is very thin. Intel requires a 13.3” (or smaller) ultrabook to be at most 18mm thick, but there’s a provision that says if a laptop has a touchscreen, it can be up to 20mm thick. Well, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13 includes a touchscreen, but it still comes in at just 17mm thick. It also manages to do all this without sacrificing battery life, as Lenovo still rates the Yoga for over eight hours of battery life.

Samsung launches “Super OLED” 3D smart TV

Samsung said its new ES8000 55-inch “Super OLED” 3D smart TV contained a dual core processor and was therefore capable of multitasking. Samsung would release TVs of this form as large as 75 inches. OLED or organic light-emitting diode is replacing LCD as it offers brighter and thinner screens than LCDs, and uses less power, yet is cheaper to manufacture.

However its TVs no longer would be controlled solely by a remote. Like the LG 55-inch OLED also announced today, Samsung TVs would be controlled by voice, gestures and face recognition.
Users can switch the TV on, open apps and perform searches using their voice or hand gestures.
The move by TV manufacturers to incorporate gestures and voice control means Microsoft’s Kinect no longer controls the gestures space.

Facebook taps HTC to build Android-powered Facebook phone

Summary: Facebook has chosen HTC over Samsung to build the first official Facebook phone, codenamed Buffy (after the television vampire slayer), according to a new rumor.
Facebook is working with Taiwanese cellphone maker HTC to build a smartphone, codenamed Buffy (after the television vampire slayer), that has the social network built into the device from the ground up. The phone is supposed to run on a modified version of Android which Facebook has heavily modified to deeply integrate its services and its mobile apps platform, according to sources familiar with the project cited by All Things Digital.
For its hardware partner, Facebook was debating between HTC and South Korea’s Samsung, and only recently chose the former. The smartphone thus won’t it to market anytime soon: its launch could be up to 18 months away.

Nissan is not a brand that one usually thinks of when it comes to smartphones and even lesser when it comes to phone cases. However, the brand recently announced that they are set to launch an iPhone case. This technology from Nissan was first developed in 2005 and is used in a number of Nissan and Infinity car models.

This technology has been developed by Nissan along with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. and had been originally designed for automotive use. Samsung, Apple Going to introduce waterproof smartphones

A common problem faced by smartphone users is the accidental seepage of water. This may occur due to rains, sweat or any other reason for that matter. At CES 2012, a company called HZO introduced a technology, which could save a smartphone from getting damaged by water, confirms a report by Pocket-lint. HZO have also spoken with representatives from Apple and Samsung about this technology and it appears that the smartphone powerhouses are keen on using this waterproofing solution on their upcoming line.

The report by Pocket-lint states that the representative from HZO has said, “We showed the Samsung Chairman the technology with a Samsung Galaxy S that we had coated with HZO and he couldn't believe his eyes. Samsung is really excited by the tech.” The website goes on to state that Apple has also been contacted by HZO and they were hoping to use this technology on the upcoming iPhone 5 as well."

HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal who has been the force behind the entire project was quoted as saying, "In order to cater to the huge demand, we need several manufacturers to manufacture Aakash. We are enhancing the specifications on the basis of feedback we have received from the first version of Aakash. So we want to make sure that the upgraded product caters to the need of the customers… We have involved ITI in order to upgrade it… We will be able to bring in Aakash-II by April."

Being referred to as the Aakash-II at the moment, the new tablet hopes to fill the gaps left gaping open by its predecessor - the Aakash tablet; and offer a better, and a faster experience. The Aakash tablet, ever since it launched has been finding itself facing both appreciation and criticism.

LG Xnote Z330 Vs MacBook Air: Z330 is thinner and lighter

LG has announced a new Ultrabook dubbed Xnote Z330. The feature-rich LG notebook will give tough fight to Apple MacBook Air and a line of new Windows 7 Ultrabook from Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, Asus and others.
The Ultrabook market is becoming more competitive with lots of outstanding products. LG Xnote Z330 is now the latest one. The Korean electronics firm has described its Ultrabook as the thinnest ever in the world. The machine will have a 13.3-inch HD LED display; it will be powered either by a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 or 1.7GHz Core i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. The Windows 7 Ultrabook highlights Rapid Start Technology that boots up the system in less than 10 seconds.
The LG Ultrabook comes with the dimensions of 315 x 215 x 14.7mm and a weight of just 1.2kg. Of course, 14.7mm thickness makes the device one of the thinnest notebooks in the world. There’s an app for everything, and now you can go ahead and ‘Fight Back’ sexual harassment, courtesy a new smartphone app. The app comes from WhyPoll, a non-profit NGO based in New Delhi, the city infamous for the alarming rise of instances of sexual harassment. The Fight Back mobile app allows alerting family and friends with the click of a button. The SOS is sent through a text message, e-mail, Facebook, and is instantly delivered. The recipient can be tracked using GPS. The app comes across as a good initiative and it would be nice to see effective apps on similar lines.

This mobile solution striving for safety of women uses mobile capabilities, like GPS, SMS, location maps, GPRS and integration with social networking site (Facebook) and e-mail.

Lenovo ThinkPad likely to taste Ice Cream Sandwich

If you own the Lenovo Thinkpad, then you may be delighted with this piece of news. Lenovo’s Thinkpad users in India are expected to soon get a bite of the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, reports Zee News. So, despite the steady inflow of newer models, Lenovo definitely doesn’t plan to dump the older ones.
Moreover, recently Lenovo's Social Media Program Manager, Mark Hopkins, posted on the company’s official forum,”I believe that our current course will be to go directly to Android 4.0 (ICS) on this product and I believe that will still be a few months away.  Hopefully I'll have some official words to give on that soon. In the meantime, we are continuing to work on interim OTA updates to address issues raised by the community.

Skype - coming soon to a Windows Phone near you

The biggest problem we had with the Windows Phones was that there was no Skype application for the platform. Before you go, ‘so what?’ we’ll remind you that Microsoft had already bought Skype, a long time back. So what’s the delay for?

According to The Verge, Skype VP Rick Osterloh has mentioned that Microsoft is working on a WP product with Skype that will be out soon enough.

Datawind to not test Aakash for water resistance

In a startling revelation, it has been stated that the makers of the Aakash tablet have reportedly refused to put the first version of the Aakash tablet to test under norms put forth by IIT Jodhpur. Datawind CEO, Suneet Singh Tuli maintained that the first version of their Aakash tablet will not be put through the test conditions to ascertain specs proposed by IIT, since they were, essentially military specifications of a rugged product - a little too high for Aakash, and hence did not make sense.

Elaborating a little on what the test norms were like, the report stated that the tablet would be tested for water resistance.

Apple may sell iPhone 4S in Singapore without cameras

Arguably one of the best features of the iPhone 4S is its camera, apart from Siri. The handset features an 8MP sensor that is capable of shooting crisp images in most lighting conditions and from our comparison done a little while back, the phone did not fare too badly in comparison with a good point and shoot compact camera. At the time of the iPhone 4S announcement, this camera placed on this smartphone was set to rival point and shoot cameras, but what good is the iPhone 4S without a camera? According to a report by Jakarta Global, three telecom operators in Singapore are set to launch this handset without either camera designed for military personnel.

The report states that one telecom operator in Singapore, M1, had posted an online advertisement for the iPhone 4S with no camera and set the price for the 64GB model at ‘more than $900 with a fresh two year contract.’

An app called "If I Die" has been released, which lets you post updates to Facebook which will only go up after you pass away. To have the update go up, three designated friends need to verify the update.  According to CBS, the app has faced mixed reviews on the social network with some users finding it inappropriate, while others saying that it's something that is needed. One user said that a lot of people pass away without saying certain things to people that might be important. Another user said that there may be some people who are terminally ill who would like to leave a message behind.

However, other users say that after you're dead, it's probably too late and things should be said while people are still alive. The app, which was made by Israeli developers, already has more than 5000 likes on the social network.
