Nissan is not a brand that one usually thinks of when it comes to smartphones and even lesser when it comes to phone cases. However, the brand recently announced that they are set to launch an iPhone case. This is not an ordinary case, though; instead, it is a case that uses special paint technology, which can repair itself, according to an announcement by Nissan. This technology from Nissan was first developed in 2005 and is used in a number of Nissan and Infinity car models.
This technology has been developed by Nissan along with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. and had been originally designed for automotive use. The brand states that this technology is being used for the first time on a non-automotive product in Europe by using it on the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case. They state that in Japan, they have already linked up with NTT Docomo to use this scratch mending technology on their Style Series N-03B mobile phones.
Nissan goes on to say, “The outer ‘paint' is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap - 'healing' the blemish.”

Nissan states that the trial is underway for the initial batch of prototypes and if demand is strong, then it will be mass produced for general use later on this year.
