As a rival to iTunes and to show the world who's boss, Sony launched a competitive music service back in December 2010 called Music Unlimited. Since then, Sony says they have more than a million ‘active’ subscribers but this also includes people in trial periods. The service was available across all their products as well as recently, for Android devices. However, in order to reach to a much wider audience, they’ve now decided to launch it as an app for iOS devices.
Ever since Apple relaxed its policy on third-party subscription based services on iTunes, we’ve had apps like Shazam and Spotify make their way to iOS devices and now it’s Sony’s turn to jump aboard. The service offers basic and premium subscriptions. The former will cost you $3.99 a month and for that, you get to stream music from your own personal library
or a few select channels while premium subscribers pay $9.99 to stream from Sony’s catalog of over 15 million songs. You’ll also be able to cache songs so you can play them offline. Sony hopes to widen their subscriber base by offering this service on iTunes, which already has a huge following. This is of no concern to us though since Sony’s service is not available in India, yet.
